Presented as a bastion of progress serving the common good, GothCorp was a regular fixture at charity galas, academic panels, and collaborations with public hospitals.
However, this philanthropic facade concealed a deeply corrupt structure, where unethical testing, the exploitation of scientists, and data manipulation were common practices. The company's downfall is directly linked to one of the most tragic and iconic cases in Gotham's history: that of Victor Fries, a brilliant cryogenics scientist whose life and career were destroyed by the criminal actions of Boyle, who tried to murder him and his wife.

In 1993, Fries was working for GothCorp, trying to find a cure for his terminally ill wife, Nora, using cryogenic preservation technology. Despite the initial success of his research, Ferris Boyle canceled the project, deeming it economically unviable, and ordered the laboratory's dismantling. In a desperate attempt to save his job, Fries was the victim of a "workplace accident" caused by corporate sabotage, leaving him for dead.
The incident left him physically and neurologically impaired, forcing him to survive in sub-zero conditions and transforming him into the criminal known as Mr. Freeze. Batman later discovered that Boyle had covered up the events, tampered with evidence, and used Fries as a scapegoat to divert the attention of investors and the local government.
🦇 Closure and Legal Consequences
In 1994, thanks to an investigation led by Batman and supported by District Attorney Harvey Dent, Ferris Boyle was arrested and charged with criminal negligence, corporate fraud, obstruction of justice, multiple medical ethics violations, and attempted double murder. GothCorp was taken over by the government and liquidated shortly after.
The scandal sparked a wave of reforms in Gotham's private scientific sector, including the creation of the Gotham Independent Medical Ethics Commission (GMEC).

Although dissolved, the consequences of the GothCorp model remain. Victor Fries, now Mr. Freeze, continues to operate outside the law, obsessed with finding a cure for Nora and taking revenge on those who took her humanity. He has the support of Batman, who has established a truce with him.
