He had keys for doors that no longer existed and kept them anyway, sorted by the year the building came down. On Sundays he laid them out on the kitchen table and named the rooms they had opened. His daughter thought it was grief. He thought it was inventory. The last one was small and brass and opened nothing he could remember, which is why he never threw it away.
