The excitement Courses through me 2 days out From summer camp My parents are just as excited They’ll get a break from my woes Intense highs, plummeting lows They think I’m there to learn French But little do they know My crush is on the attendance list & I’m more interested in a French kiss Senses Felt elevated in that period of time Goosebumps formed When I saw him In the cafeteria line I’ve grown since then It’s unhealthy to be consumed by a man But I was 15 & he wrote his number on my hand He had a license Captain of the hockey team His axe cologne & confidence captivated me into a love struck trance I never went for the nice guys Til the age of 21 My man I’ve held him dearly 8 years to be exact Feels like a fever dream To think I was a preppy girl Head of the cheerleading team Well doesn’t that sound like a familiar movie Hockey & cheer captains High school sweethearts I came to realize I didn’t fit in, Forcing an agenda Struggling to breathe Im glad he cheated I’m glad I started smoking weed It led me to a group of people Who loved me for me People who didn’t put others in a box But rather looked outside of it People who have stuck around Long after graduating Maybe it all happens for a reason It seemed to Looking back I don’t regret a thing Undeveloped frontal lobe Clouded my judgement Til it all clicked in All thanks to growth & a few good friends Over a decades past & our bond has no end It’s not about popularity Your status quo It’s about finding your people In their presence, you glow.
