Originally, the puruṣārthas are only three-dharma, artha, and kāma. Mokṣa is left completely up to the individual. Dharma is more concerned with the business of living, and less about mokṣa, unlike popular belief.

“…………The one who seeks mokṣa is beyond the stages of life and outside society, and his conduct does not fall within the scope of the dharma śāstras.”

John Storey (Cultural Studies Professor) offers six different definitions of popular culture. It is

1. It is a culture that is widely favoured or liked.


2. It is whatever is left after you substracted "high culture."


3. It can be defined as commercial objects that are produced for mass consumption by non-discriminating consumers.


4. It is folk culture and is created by the people (authentic) as opposed to commercial enterprises.


5. It is partly imposed on by the dominant classes, but the subordinate classes decide what to keep or discard.


6. The distinction between "authentic" and "commercial" is blurred.

• Art as Representation or Mimesis. Representation of art as an imitation or copying became the mainstream meaning of art in Greece. Plato first developed the idea of art as “mimesis,” which, in Greek, means copying or imitation. How immaculately it replicated the original subject became the measure of its value.


• Art as Expression of Emotional content. Dramatic, sublime and heartfelt art becomes a way to express oneself during the Romantic movement , with audience response becoming key to the valuation of the content. The emotions that were felt when the art was witnessed became its barometer for success.


• Art as Form. Formal qualities of art became influential in the 18th century, with the principles of art and design, like balance, rhythm, harmony and unity became as important as the content of the work of art.

Our best work comes from our basest desires. People do what they feel like doing. Strip away the fake morals, the shallow altruism of “second-handers,” and the prison of caring what people think you should do with your life and let yourself (and others) do your best, most authentic work. True impact and lasting goodness come from a central purpose in the individual.

When working with people, discover their most core desires and liberate them to create. As a result, they will do their best work, they will love it, you will love it, and it will be beautiful, and everyone will love it.
