Nathan Gardels: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once commented that: “When eras are on the decline, all tendencies are subjective; but, on the other hand, when matters are ripening for a new epoch, all tendencies are objective. Each worthy effort turns its force from the inward to the outward world.” 

By that definition, ours is an era of decline that has turned from the outward to the inward obsession with identity and “authenticity,” both personal and tribal, fueled by digital connectivity.

The industrial style is more of a masculine style, with exposed pipes and beams. The main materials used in decorating are bricks and concrete. The furniture, often unfinished, is usually paired with antiques.

Gezelligheid refers to a convivial, cozy, or warm atmosphere. This can be the warmth of being with loved ones or the feeling of seeing a friend after a long absence.

It is similar to the Danish concept of hyggelig and the German concept of gemütlichkeit.

It suggests a general togetherness that provides a feeling of warmth. Many consider it the word that most closely represents the heart of Dutch culture.

Anything within the context of art is art. It might make you roll your eyes to think about a highly paid artist flinging paint at a canvas like a toddler. But much as John Cage taught us the difference between noise and sound, seeing art that you disagree with can challenge your notions, or help you suss out your beliefs.
