Ludus Latrunculorum

A variant of the ancient Greek game Petteia, this two-player strategy game was popular in ancient Rome. The board game had a grid of varying sizes, as documented in the first century BC.

A primitive combination of checkers and chess, Ludus Latrunculorum, also known as Latrunculi had the players moving backwards and sideways in the grid with the aim of surrounding an isolated enemy player. Its exact rules remain unclear.

Always Gone

Chest enclosed
heart about to explode
please don't leave again
you've already left
I know it's not the way I think of it
but I can't help but think of it that way
I know you care about me
so why are you so far?

Why does my heart want you so
knowing you are too soon to leave
knowing I will be left with tears
and memories once lived now gone.
Through the darkness of it all
it was worth it
you are worth the pain of seeing you leave
because at least I got to see you

Why does my heart whisper
your name into the wind,
when all it does is travel the other way?
Why do you torture me so
with words of brilliance
only to be left behind
with the hands of time?

Complicated

I want to give you everything
Its you I want to hold
But how can I do this
When right now I feel so cold

I wonder if I’m wasting my time
On something that may not be
When all I want to show you
Is the whole me

I could tell you a million times
Just how great life could be
If only you can change your ways
For a survival of you and me

I could walk away right now
And always wonder why
My tears would be just like the snow
Frozen when I cry

Art @ArtReview_ a double whammy: online I ask , "when, (if ever) should we work for free?"; and, in the mag, "who can afford to work at scale (and how)?"

The World’s Oldest Pizza Parlour
  • Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba, established in 1738, is the world’s oldest pizza place.
  • Initially being an open-air stand for free-hand pizza making, the place turned into a restaurant in 1830 and was even visited by King Nasone.
  • The famous pizza with tomato sauce, oil, oregano and garlic is known as the marinara, a name coined from the fisherman’s wife who prepared the dish for the husband returning from the bay.

The "Ganbaru" Trait

Long hours and sacrificed leisure time were (and still are) seen as positive virtues, while the “ganbaru” trait (“trying hard”) is valued above all. These attributes soon became an embodiment of the working ideal.

No One Knows

Nobody knows the pain
you feel...

Nobody knows the way
it hurts...

It leaves no scar
they can see...

Nobody knows how much
you wish it away...

And nobody know how
it just grows and grows...

And nobody knows what it is
that you know...

Cause nobody knows the pain
Inside.

You’ve watched it, I’ve watched it, Grandma has watched it. But where did it come from, and why?

In 2007, the web was at an inflection point — where streaming content met social media — and the frontiers of this new world were strange, gross and exhilarating. We logged on just to collectively recoil at the very worst of what we found. When you’re presented with something in a negative imperative, as in don’t Google 2 girls 1 cup, “you almost feel challenged to do the opposite,” says brad Kim, founder and Editor-In-Chief of know your meme -
