Kapila And Ahimsa

Many historic personalities in Hinduism and Jainism, mythical figures, pilgrimage sites in Indian religion, as well as an ancient variety of cow went by the name Kapila.

Kapila is credited with authoring an influential sutra, called Samkhya-sutra(also called Kapila-sutra),which aphoristically presents the dualistic philosophy of Samkhya. These sutras were explained in another well studied text of Hinduism called the Samkhyakarika. Beyond the Samkhya theories,he appears in many dialogues of Hindu texts, such as in explaining and defending the principle of Ahimsa (non-violence) in the Mahabharata.

Recuperation

Recuperation: the process by which subcultural ideas and images become commodified and reincorporated into mainstream society

Today, recuperation is achieved through micro-aesthetics, memes, and online communities they stem from

Unlike the radical subcultures of yore, which had their own visual schema, language, and aesthetics, these digital scenes aren’t exactly subcultural.

They often promote a sort of political weakening.

Definitions of Popular Culture

John Storey (Cultural Studies Professor) offers six different definitions of popular culture. It is

  1. It is a culture that is widely favoured or liked.

  2. It is whatever is left after you substracted "high culture."

  3. It can be defined as commercial objects that are produced for mass consumption by non-discriminating consumers.

  4. It is folk culture and is created by the people (authentic) as opposed to commercial enterprises.

  5. It is partly imposed on by the dominant classes, but the subordinate classes decide what to keep or discard.

  6. The distinction between "authentic" and "commercial" is blurred.

The Antidote

Ritual. Narrative. Context. Temporal stability. In short, everything missing from the connected isolation of digital disconnectivity is the antidote to its corrosion of community.

The recovery of culture from the grip of subjectivism and its dispersion into disparate bits of information is the daunting challenge of art — and technology — in the next turn of the digital age.

Nathan Gardels is the editor-in-chief of Noema Magazine.

Celebrations In India
  • Devotees pray for peace, wealth, and success on this day, and seek Lord Ram's blessings.
  • On this day, many people also perform "Kanya Puja", in which nine girls representing the nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped.
  • Some devotees also bath and dress up small Lord Ram idols, light a lamp in front, and then place them in a cradle to commemorate his birth while kheer is prepared as an offering to God.

Don't snow me

it's every fear that you dared to ignore
in a shiny black mercedes and walking up to your door
but if you don't like me anymore then why am i here
i can see millions of voices behind your every sneer

bury me underground
i will not make a sound
you're pushing my teeth in
you're making a scene again
you'll find yourself alone in the end.

it’s every hand that you declined
there's nothing left to do when i am stuck in mine
dropping a heart when it beats out of time
i need my indifference just to survive

bury me underground
i won't make a sound
you're pushing my teeth in
you're making a scene again
you'll find yourself alone, in the end.

do what it wants and bend till you break
my apathetic face is starting to ache
smiling at the walls proved too much to take
so we took to digging holes instead

bury me underground
i won't make a sound
you're pushing my teeth in
you're pushing my teeth in
you're making a scene again
you'll find yourself alone, in the end.
